PORTLAND, Ore. — Three attempts at the triple jump. Seems numerically appropriate in a way. That's what Dieumerci Migani will get Friday as he competes at the NCAA West First Round in Fayetteville, Ark.
 
Friday's triple jump serves as the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. It's why Migani and the rest of the athletes only get three attempts. Those three serve as the qualifying jumps for the final site of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will take place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
 
The three attempts will give Migani a sense of urgency. Migani qualified for the NCAA West Prelims off his sixth attempt at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. That's when he became the first Viking to crack 50 feet in the triple jump with a mark of 50-00.75 (15.26m). It was his second school record in as many days at the Big Sky meet, following his record of 10.51 seconds during the prelims of the men's 100 meters.
 
He'll need to summon that level early Friday. Migani will compete in the first of four flights, which get progressively better with the highest ranked athletes competing last. Migani, for his part, finished the outdoor regular season tied for 48th in NCAA West region. After a few scratches, he heads into Friday with the 45th-best mark in the triple jump field.
 
But rankings won't matter Friday. All that matters is putting up a strong mark on the day as the top 12 at the end of three jumps across all four flights will advance to Eugene.
 
So, put up a big jump and who knows? The only known element heading into Friday (2:45 p.m. PT / 4:45 p.m. CT) is that Migani will have three attempts to try to do something special.
