Vikings Drop Road Match to Nevada, 6-1

RENO. Nevada - The Portland State women's tennis team returned to competition on Tuesday, suffering a 6-1 defeat on the road against the University of Nevada at the McArthur Tennis Center.

As a result, the Vikings fell to 5-7 overall while the Pack improved to 7-7 on the year.

Despite the loss, the Vikings found some silver linings on Tuesday, clinching a doubles win and taking three singles matches to third sets.

In doubles play, Momoko Yoshimura and Nika Beukers built upon their 5-1 season as a duo, battling out a 7-6 (5) victory over Marlene Forester and Lea Cakarevic at line two. However, UNR secured wins at lines one and three, earning the opening point, before clinching the dual with three straight-set wins in singles play.

Capu Sanoner delivered Portland State's sole point of the day with a win at No.3. Making just her fifth singles appearance of the season, the senior broke through with a three-set victory over Lou-Anne Guerbert, winning 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3. Additionally, Beukers and Scarlett Perkins narrowly missed out on wins for PSU. Beukers fell to Forester at line two 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (5), while Perkins' opponent, Cakarevic, warded off a comeback attempt by the freshman to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 on court six.

Looking ahead, the Vikings will direct their focus toward the final four matches on their regular season schedule. They'll return to action this Sunday, March 31st at Northern Arizona (10:00 a.m.) before returning home to host Idaho on Saturday, April 6th. They'll close out the regular season on the road at UC Davis (April 18th) and Sacramento State (April 20th).
