HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Portland State softball team dropped its final two games of the 2024 Spring Fling Tournament on Saturday, falling to LMU 5-2 and Hawai'i 8-2 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

LMU went on to beat Tennessee State in the tournament championship, improving to 10-10 on the year. A winless weekend dropped the Vikings to 3-14 overall, while Hawai'i moved to 4-11.

Portland State's
Maddie Thompson and
Lorraine Alo were named to the All-Tournament Team following Saturday's games. Thompson had a phenomenal weekend at the plate, going 10-for-19 (.526) to lead the Vikings offensively. Alo was 5-for-13 at the dish with two RBI.

Portland State fell behind 4-0 to the Lions in its opening game. The Vikings' bats were quiet through the opening four innings but finally came alive in the fifth.
Natalia Martinez drew a leadoff walk before Thompson and
Alexa Cepeda loaded the bases with back-to-back singles. This set the table for
Emily Johansen, who capitalized on the opportunity, driving in Martinez with an RBI single through the right side. Thompson capped the scoring for the Vikings, scoring on a wild pitch later in the frame.

After their lead was cut in half, the Lions responded quickly with a home run in the bottom of the fifth, extending their lead to 5-2. They held the Vikings to just one hit in their final two at-bats, securing the 5-2 win.Â

The Vikings were the first to score in their final game of the day against Hawai'i.
Grace Johnson and
Alapese Matautia gave the Vikings a two-run lead with back-to-back two-out RBI in the second inning. The Rainbow Wahine later scored four runs in the second and two more in the third to secure a 6-2 advantage. While shutting down the Vikings for the remainder of the contest, Hawai'i capped the win with two more runs in the sixth to win 8-2.

Portland State tallied 15 hits on the day, knocking seven against LMU and eight against UH. Thompson had herself a day at the plate, accounting for a third of the Vikings' hits, going 5-for-7 (.714).

Grace Kimball,
Allicitie Frost,
Annie Lemos and
Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung all saw action in the circle on Saturday. Frost tossed a complete game against the Lions in game one, allowing four earned runs over six innings. Kimball got the start in game two, pitching two innings before Lemos and Nakoa-Chung finished things off.
The Vikings will return home for a three-game series on Thursday, March 7 and Friday, March 8 against Seattle U at Hillsboro Stadium.
