BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team claimed the doubles point and two singles wins on Sunday afternoon but couldn't pull off the win against Montana, falling 4-3 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
The Vikings dropped to 4-7 on the year and 1-3 in Big Sky play. Sunday marked Montana's first conference victory, moving to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in conference.Â
Portland State had a strong start, pulling off a pair of comeback wins in doubles action to take the opening point. The Griz opened with a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot, meaning the Vikings needed victories on the final two courts, and they delivered. Andrea Brignacca and Luka Jovanovic clinched the first match for PSU, rallying back to a 7-6 (4) victory over Moritz Stoeger and Baltazar Wiger-Nordas on court three. Cade Edwards and Simon Kuszynski followed with a thrilling win at line two, securing the point with a 7-6 win over Chris Zhang and Tom Bittner.Â
Montana responded well in singles play, taking four matches from the Vikings in straight sets to clinch the dual. Following a Montana win at No. 2, Kuszynski secured the Vikings' first singles win of the day completing a dominant 6-2, 6-3 win over Chris Zhang at line five. The Griz took the lead with victories on courts four and three, leaving the Vikings' fate in the hands of Jan Semerak and Hayden Elliott. After dropping his opening set 6-3, Semerak nearly pushed a third but fell short in a second-set tiebreak, losing 6-3, 7-6 (4) to Fernando Perez at line three. With the match already clinched in Montana's favor, Elliott battled out a three-set win at the six spot, beating Dragos Bucurescu 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 to end the day.Â
The Vikings will return to action on the road next weekend when they take on Idaho State on Friday, March 22 followed by Weber State on Saturday, March 23.Â
