Vikings Sweep Eagles in Weekend Finale

BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Portland State men's tennis team claimed its first conference win of the season on Sunday afternoon, sweeping Eastern Washington 7-0 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.

The Vikings improved to 4-4 (1-1 BSC) on the year while the Eagles dropped to 0-7 (0-1 BSC). Sunday's win was Portland State's first sweep over a Big Sky opponent since 2018, when the Vikings beat then-BSC member North Dakota, 7-0.

The Vikings claimed the opening point of Sunday's contest, winning two of three doubles matches. Teaming up for the first time this season, Cade Edwards and Simon Kuszynski notched a 6-4 victory over Tyler Waddock and Brady Thomas at line three. Hubert Theriault and Luka Jovanovic improved to 4-0 as a pair, topping Drew Dillon and Arshjot Bhatti 6-4 at line two to clinch point for PSU.

The Vikings earned six singles wins to complete the sweep, four of which were in straight sets. Andrea Brignacca notched his second win at No. 1 this season, cruising to a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Caden Kammerer. Both Hembo Mathiasen and Theriault posted 6-2, 6-2 wins over their Eagle opponents. Mathiasen secured a victory over Bhatti on court five, while Theriault extended his weekend record to 4-0 by defeating Tyler Dalos at line four. Kuszynski rounded out the straight-set wins with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Erik Sarlvik at No.6.

Jan Semerak and Jovanovic both dropped their first sets before rallying back to win in three, ultimately securing the sweep for Portland State. Semerak battled to a 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7) win over Waddock at line two before Jovanovic capped things off with an exciting 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10) defeat of Dillon at the three spot.

The Vikings will play just two matches over the next 20 days. They'll return to action at Northern Arizona next Sunday, March 3 before hosting Gonzaga at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center on Saturday, March 16.
