Vikings Post Back-to-Back Shutouts in Dominant Home-Opening Sweep of Boxers

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State softball team dominated in its home-opening doubleheader on Saturday, posting back-to-back 10-0 run-rule victories over Pacific at Gordon Faber Field 4.

The Vikings' (3-9) pitching staff held the Boxers (2-6) to just one hit over ten innings, combining for a no-hitter in game one. Portland State's bats were equally outstanding, delivering 14 hits (14-for-35, .400) and 16 earned runs.

The Vikings opened the day with a three-run first inning fueled by Logan Riggenbach's sacrifice fly and Ellie Babbitt's two-RBI single. An inning later, Alexa Cepeda scored on a wild pitch before Paetynn Lopez brought home Riggenbach to extend the lead to five. In the fourth inning, the Vikings doubled their lead, scoring five more runs, highlighted by RBI from Babbitt and Emily Johansen. A 10-run lead and a scoreless fifth from the Boxers sealed the victory for PSU.

Viking starter Grace Kimball was stellar in the circle, striking out eight of the eleven batters she faced. Annie Lemos took over for Kimball in the top of the fourth, tossing 1.1 innings to complete the combined shutout and no-hitter. Kimball's impressive career-high eight strikeouts secured her first win of the season, boosting her record to 1-3.

The Vikings' bats stayed red-hot in game two, tallying seven runs in the second inning. The imposing frame was powered by RBI singles from Shea Garcia, Grace Johnson, and Makayla Romeo, along with RBI doubles from Brooke Subia and Riggenbach. Portland State added three runs in the bottom of the fourth, allowing Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung and the defense to clinch the second run-rule victory of the day.

Vikings starter Allicitie Frost earned her first win of 2024, giving up only one hit in three innings while striking out five batters. Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung completed the job, recording three strikeouts in the final two innings to secure the shutout.

Ten Vikings contributed at least one hit in the sweep. Babbitt notched a team-high three RBI, while Subia and Riggenbach added two RBI each. The pitching staff held the Boxers to a .033 team batting average.

Continuing their road schedule, the Vikings will travel to Honolulu next week for the Spring Fling Tournament hosted by the University of Hawaii. They'll open the weekend against LMU on Thursday, Feb. 29 at 3:30 PM HT/5:30 PM PT.
