POCATELLO, Idaho - The Portland State women's tennis team dropped its first match of the weekend to Idaho State, 4-3 at Reed Gym on Friday afternoon.
The Vikings (3-4, 1-1 BSC) won the doubles point but gave up four singles matches to the Bengals (5-3, 1-0 BSC).
The doubles point came down to two tight matches that went the Vikings' way. After the Bengals opened with a win on court one, PSU rallied to clinch 7-6 (5) wins on courts two and three. Momoko Yoshimura and Nika Beukers earned their second straight conference win at line two, beating Asem Shoybek and Stefanya Shalakhova. At No. 3, Elizabeth Strongina and Makoto Ohara improved to 3-1 on the season with a gritty win over Hana Cho and Sydney Morris to clinch the opening point for Portland State.
Strongina and Scarlett Perkins were the only Vikings to win their singles matches, doing so in straight sets. Strongina beat Cho 6-3, 6-4 on the top court while Perkins won her fourth match of the season 6-4, 6-2 over Megan Lang-Gould.
The Bengals notched straight-set victories at lines two and six but Ohara and Yoshimura's matches both went to a deciding set. At No. 3, Ohara won her opening set before Sol O'Lideadha battled back to a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 win. Yoshimura pushed a third set on court four, eventually falling to Asem Shoybek 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-0.
The Vikings will get the opportunity to bounce back this Sunday as they head to Ogden to take on Weber State at the Ogden Athletic Club (9:30 am PT).
