SPOKANE, Wash. — The Portland State men's distance medley relay team placed seventh in the third-best time in program history to highlight the Vikings' first day at the Big Sky Indoor Championships Friday.
Â
The foursome of
Abdinajib Abade,
Dieumerci Migani,
Amir Ahmed and
Abdi Ibrahim finished in 10:12.61, giving them the best DMR time by a Viking team since Ben Richardson, Nathan Fleck, Neil Seibert and T-Roy Brown set the school record at 10:05.11 in 2015.
Â
The seventh-place finish gave the Viking men two points in the team standings.
Alison Calvin-Stupfel scored a point for the Viking women while coming up clutch in the high jump Friday. Calvin-Stupfel made a third-attempt clearance at 5-03.00 (1.60m), converting under pressure to place eighth for the Vikings. If she had missed at that height, she would have placed 10th overall which would have put her out of scoring position.
Â
A handful of other Vikings set personal bests Friday even without finishing in scoring position.
Laura Beghin was one of those, as she shaved three seconds off her 800-meter personal best with a finish in 2:15.93. That wasn't enough to advance Beghin to tomorrow's 800-meter final, but it did put her a half-second out of the top 10 all-time at Portland State.
Â
Beghin also ran the anchor leg of the Viking women's distance medley relay team that finished 10th in 12:53.65.
Campbell Faust,
Ashley Peterson and
Ania Kapustka joined Beghin on the relay.
Â
Elsewhere,
Noah Meucci put down the second-best mark of his career in the men's weight throw, throwing 45-07.00 (13.89m) on his second attempt of the day. That wasn't enough for Meucci to advance to the final of the event, but it would have ranked him seventh all-time at PSU if not for his personal best of 47-03.00 (14.40m) from a week earlier at the George Fox Indoor Meet #2.
Â
Meucci will double back in the men's shot put at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Migani will open the final day of the Big Sky Indoor Championships in the men's triple jump at 10:30 a.m.
