SAN JOSE, Calif. - Portland State softball played only one of its two scheduled games on Saturday at the Silicon Valley Classic. The Vikings faced Utah State early in the day, falling 3-2 at Spartan Softball Stadium. A series of rain delays led to the postponement of their second game against San Jose State until tomorrow. Â
The Vikings will now close out the weekend with a Sunday doubleheader against San Jose State (9 a.m.) and Fordham (11:30 a.m.) at Spartan Softball Stadium.Â
The Vikings (1-7) challenged a Nevada team (8-2) that had claimed five consecutive victories leading up to Saturday's matchup. The Vikings narrowly missed spoiling that streak, resulting in the smallest win margin for the Pack in seven games.Â
Annie Lemos made the most of her first start of the season holding Nevada, who typically averages nine runs per game, to just three. Conversely, Nevada starter Tyra Clary was also effective, limiting the Vikings' offense to only three hits and two runs in the contest.
The Pack jumped out to a two-run lead in their opening at-bat, which they extended to three runs in the second inning. However, Lemos found her groove in the bottom of the third and never looked back, allowing just four hits for the remainder of the game. Â
Portland State's runs came in the top of the top of the fourth, courtesy of
Paetynn Lopez. With
Alison Harris and
Lorraine Alo aboard, Lopez slammed a two-out, two-RBI triple to cut UNR's lead to one. Unfortunately, the Viking bats went quiet after that, as Clary held PSU hitless the rest of the way, securing the 3-2 win for the Pack.
For only the third time this season, the Vikings played errorless defense. Lemos capitalized on the solid defensive play, striking out three batters while throwing her first career complete game, which was also just the second of the year for the Vikings. Alo, Lopez, and
Shea Garcia contributed to the Vikings' hit total.
