SEATTLE, Wash. — Abdinajib Abade made a big kick over the final 50 meters of the men's 800 meters, moving to the shoulder of the leader before finishing second in his heat in 1:56.44. It was a shot of adrenaline for the small Portland State track & field team competing at the UW Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
Â
Abade's time of 1:56.44 gave him a personal best by nearly half a second.
Amir Ahmed followed him in 1:58.09, giving the Vikings another personal best on the day, as well as the No. 9 time by a freshman in the indoor 800.
Â
Ania Kapustka opened Saturday on the women's side of the 800 meters and set her PSU best at the distance with a finish in 2:25.19.
Â
Zach Grams was the lone Viking in action Friday when he ran his first 5k of the season. Grams finished in 15:09.22, setting an indoor best for himself in the process.
Â
The weekend's small crew will rejoin their teammates for a couple of different meets next weekend. A portion of the team will compete at The Podium in Spokane for the Riverfront Invitational, Feb. 2-3. The rest of the team will compete closer to home at the George Fox Indoor Meet #1 on Feb. 3 and the Portland Indoor Two on Feb. 4.
