Vikings Drop Season Opener at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. - The Portland State women's tennis team dropped its season opener to Oregon 7-0 on Friday, despite several close matches.

The match was also the Ducks first of the 2024 season, as they improved to 1-0, while the Vikings fell to 0-1.

For the first time this season, the Vikings were able to showcase their doubles play. Momoko Yoshimura and Makoto Ohara impressed in their debut as a duo, defeating Jo-Yee Chan and Nina Geissler 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. Also debuting as a pair were Scarlett Perkins and Elizabeth Strongina on court three. The sophomore/freshman duo battled Olivia Symons and Karin Young to a 6-6 tie, before ultimately falling 7-6 (7-1). Capu Sanoner and Nika Beukers struggled against Oregon's top team, dropping their No. 1 match 6-0 to Uxia Martinez and Sophie Luescher.

The Ducks took care of business in singles play, but the Vikings were not easy to defeat. Sanoner and Yoshimura both pushed their opponents to third-set tiebreaks. Playing at the No. 3 spot for just the second time in her career, Sanoner fought back from a first-set loss to Symons with a 7-5 set-two win. In the end, Symons prevailed, edging Sanoner 10-7 in the tiebreak. Yoshimura had a similar match on court five against Chan. Chan took the first set 7-5 before Yoshimura answered with a 6-3 set-two win. Chan clinched the match with a 10-7 advantage in the tiebreak. Ohara also competed well on court four, dropping her match 6-4, 6-3 to Martinez.

Oregon also emerged victorious on courts 1, 2 and 6 to secure the 7-0 sweep.

The Vikings will return home for their season opener on Sunday, Jan. 21. They'll face Linfield at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center beginning at 10 am.
