McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team made the most of a last-minute schedule change Saturday afternoon, securing its first victory of the season 7-0 at Linfield.
Due to weather-related facility closures, the Vikings were forced to move the match to McMinnville, one day earlier than scheduled. Saturday's match was considered an exhibition for the Wildcats, who don't officially open their season until Feb. 10.
After losing to Oregon on Friday, the Vikings had an opportunity to bounce back, and they seized it, improving to 1-1 on the year.
"After a fast turnaround, battling the adversity of school cancelations, match changes and ice, we had a great all-around team match today,"
Maddie Egan said. "Everyone bounced back from yesterday and played hard. Linfield is filled with great competitors, so I'm proud of our team and proud to get our first win of the season!"
Sporting a slightly different doubles lineup from Friday, the Vikings rolled to three wins to open the day. Freshman
Scarlett Perkins secured her first collegiate doubles victory alongside Egan, blanking their opponents 6-0 on court three.
Nika Beukers and
Capu Sanoner made similar work of Linfield's top duo, notching a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot.
Makoto Ohara and
Elizabeth Strongina capped the performance with a 6-2 win on court two.
The Vikings' solid play continued into singles action. Egan and Perkins each won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and 6.
Momoko Yoshimura achieved her first singles victory as a Viking on court four (6-0, 6-1) followed by a 6-1, 6-0 win by Ohara (No. 3) and a 6-1, 6-1 victory from Beukers (No.2). Linfield's Sarah Forester pushed Strongina to a first-set tiebreak on court one but the sophomore responded with a dominant 6-0 set-two win to clinch the match (7-6 (5), 6-0).
Portland State will return to action Saturday, Jan. 27 in its newly-established home opener against Portland at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (11:00 am).
