HILLSBORO, Ore. - The Portland State women's soccer team claimed its third-straight victory on Friday evening at Hillsboro Stadium, defeating Northern Colorado 2-1 thanks to an 89th-minute goal.
The Vikings jumped to 4-5-0 on the year (1-0-0 BSC), while the Bears fell to 0-10-1 (0-1-0 BSC).
Both teams used penalty kicks to score their first goals of the night. Portland State's
Abi Hoffman scored her fourth goal of the season, capitalizing on a PK opportunity in the 26th minute to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Also taking advantage of a PK, Northern Colorado netted the equalizer in the 63rd minute.
The Vikings recorded five shots and a pair of corner kicks in the final 30 minutes of action but it wasn't until the 89th minute that they netted the game-winner, courtesy of
Ocean Rideout. From 35 yards out, the sophomore deflected a UNC defender's pass off her left foot, over the goalkeeper's head, and into the goal. The Vikings held strong for the final minute and 34 seconds, securing their first Big Sky win of the season in dramatic fashion.
Portland State outshot the Bears 15-10. Hoffman led the team with five attempts, while Rideout added four. In goal,
Eden Millan earned her first win as a Viking. She recorded five saves in the contest including a crucial one in the final ten minutes of action.
Friday's win marked the second straight match the Vikings clinched in the final two minutes, after doing the same at CSUN last Sunday. They'll look to build on that momentum this Sunday, Sept. 24 against Northern Arizona at Hillsboro Stadium (noon).
