Vikings Picked 8th, 9th In Big Sky Conference Preseason Polls

The Big Sky Conference released its preseason polls on Monday at the Big Sky Football Kickoff event being held in Spokane, WA. Portland State was picked eighth in the coaches poll and ninth in the media poll in the 12-team league.

Portland State was 4-7 in 2022, 3-5 and 7th in the Big Sky Conference. Ironically, the Vikings were also picked eighth and ninth in last season's preseason polls as well.

The Vikings return 39 letterwinners and 14 starters for the 2023 season under ninth-year Head Coach Bruce Barnum. PSU features a strong and experienced returning offense, led by JR QB Dante Chachere. The Vikings also had the top recruiting class in the Big Sky Conference and third-best in the nation according to 247Sports.com.

Chachere, along with SR LB Isaiah Henry and Barnum, are currently representing Portland State Football at the Big Sky Football Kickoff Event. They will be interviewed live on Football Kickoff ESPN+ Show between 11:29 and 11:45 a.m. this morning.

Montana State, the 2022 Big Sky co-Champion and national semifinalist (12-2, 8-0), was picked to win the league in both polls. After that, polling was mixed among the top teams in the league.

Sacramento State, also a 2022 Big Sky co-Champion (12-1, 8-0), was picked third in the coaches poll and fourth in the media poll. UC Davis (6-5, 5-3) was chosen second in the coaches poll and fifth in the media poll. Idaho (7-5, 6-2), also a 2022 playoff participant, was second in the media poll, but fifth in the coaches poll. The other playoff participant in 2022, Montana (8-5, 4-4), was picked sixth by the coaches and third by the media.

Portland State opens its season on Sept. 2 at Oregon, then plays at Wyoming on Sept. 9. The Vikings will open at home on Sept. 16 with a non-conference game against North American, then have its Big Sky home opener against Cal Poly on Sept. 23.

PSU plays at number-one Montana State on Sept. 30. The Vikings will also host Idaho State, Eastern Washington and Montana at Hillsboro Stadium this season.

Portland State football season tickets, single-game tickets and group tickets are on sale. Tickets start at prices as low as $15, $10 for group tickets. To purchase Vikings' single-game tickets, or season tickets, call 1-888-VIK-TIKS or visit www.GoViks.com/tickets.
