HILLSBORO, Ore. – Portland State softball lost the final game of its three-game series against Sacramento State on Saturday at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. The Vikings are now 15-22 and 6-6 in Big Sky action, while the Hornets improved to 26-14 overall and 10-2 in conference play.
Prior to first pitch, the Vikings honored their lone senior, Olivia Dean, a two-time all-conference shortstop under head coach Meadow McWhorter.
Similar to Friday, Sacramento State scored first in game three, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After a single and a double from Maddie Thompson and Emily Johansen, Thompson scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at one.
After five scoreless innings, Sacramento State broke the tie with a three-run sixth inning, before adding another run in the top of the seventh. Despite seven hits, the Vikings' offense couldn't chip away at the lead as the Hornets won 5-1 to clinch the series sweep.
Viking starter Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung took the loss in the circle, despite a solid showing. The freshman tossed 6.2 innings, striking out four while allowing four earned runs.
Portland State will close out its regular season schedule next weekend (April 28-29) in Greeley, Colo., as they take on Northern Colorado in a three-game series at Gloria Rodriguez Field. The regular season series finale will begin with a doubleheader on Friday, April 28 (2/4:30 p.m. PT), followed by a single game on Saturday, April 29 (12 p.m.).
