Vikings Down Eagles in Regular Season Finale

CHENEY, Wash. – The Portland State men's tennis team notched four singles wins in its season finale on Saturday, earning a 4-3 victory over Eastern Washington at the EWU Tennis Center.

The Vikings finished the season 7-13 overall and 3-5 in conference action, ending the year in a three-way tie with Montana and Idaho State. Due to tiebreak rules, the Grizzlies and Bengals took the final two spots in the Big Sky Championship Tournament field, leaving the Vikings out of the mix.

The Eagles finished the year 4-12 overall and 0-6 in Big Sky action, also missing out on a tournament spot.

Impressively, Portland State's victory came after dropping the opening point to the Eagles in doubles action.

Singles wins from Andrea Brignacca, Jonas Hembo Mathiasen, Luka Jovanovic and Simon Kuszynski clinched the win for PSU.

Kuszynski finished his freshman season with a 3-2 record against Big Sky opponents. He surpassed the .500 mark on Saturday with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Erik Sarlvik at the No. 4 spot. On the top court, Brignacca pulled off a gritty 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Steven Paz. Winning his eighth match of the season, Mathiasen cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Tyler Dalos at the No. 3 spot. Clinching the match at the No. 2 position was Jovanovic who battled his way to a 7-6, 7-6 win over Caden Kammaerer.

In singles and doubles play, the Vikings won 34 more matches compared to 2021, while improving their overall match win total by four.
