Vikings Fall to Broncos in Weekend Finale

BOISE, Idaho - The Portland State softball team lost its final game of the weekend, 24-6, to Boise State on Sunday afternoon at Dona Larsen Park. The Vikings fell to 6-16 overall, while the Broncos extended their win streak to four, improving to 12-10 on the year.

Boise State's bats were too much for the Vikings to handle in the series' first two games, and Sunday's finale was no different. The Broncos exploded in the opening inning, scoring 13 runs in the bottom of the first, before adding five more in the second to take an 18-0 lead.

Emily Johansen put the Vikings on the board with a solo home run in the third. The Vikings continued chipping away at the deficit in the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits. Paetynn Lopez started the rally with a leadoff home run before Trinity Holden scored Logan Riggenbach with an RBI single. The Vikings batted through the lineup in the frame, scoring three more runs on a Bronco error and an RBI from Bailee Noland.

Boise State extended its lead to 24-6 in the bottom half of the fourth before holding Portland State scoreless in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.

The Vikings totaled seven hits in the contest. Natalia Martinez led the way with two, while five other Vikings recorded one. The Broncos finished with 16.

Following a bye weekend, the Vikings will return to action in their home opener on Wednesday, March 22 in a doubleheader against Corban (Ore.), beginning at 3 p.m.
