Personal Best, Heat Win for Viking Freshmen Highlight Team's Day of Promise at WSU Open

RESULTS (PDF)

SPOKANE, Wash. —
It was a show of promise in the Palouse for the Portland State track & field program Saturday at The Podium. And if that weren't enough "P's" for everyone, Peyten Woodruff was one of the Vikings showing promise at the WSU Open Saturday, along with her freshman classmate Emma Stolte.

Woodruff posted the fastest mile time for the Vikings Saturday, as she ran close to the top of her heat throughout before kicking to a 10-second personal best of 5:07.56. Woodruff's time beat her finish two weeks earlier at the Portland Indoor One, and moved her up to sixth on the all-time freshman list in the mile.

Stotle moved up to 10th on the freshman list after winning her heat by more than six seconds in a time of 5:11.75. Stolte started way back in the trailing group, but moved into the lead group after the second lap. She pushed into the lead with 350 meters to go, and stretched it to a 25-meter lead at the bell.

Isa Swain, another freshman, led her section of the women's 3,000 meters over the middle third of the race before finishing sixth in her heat in 10:37.61. Jalen Marcil ran a later section of the 3k, finishing in 10:57.06.

Alex Solberg and Cam McChesney competed on the men's side of the 3,000 meters, and finished fifth and 10th, respectively, in times of 8:31.27 and 8:38.48. Solberg, who is a redshirt freshman for the Vikings, beat his prep personal best in the outdoor 3k by more than 36 seconds.

Wendy Hare, the team's fourth true freshman in action Saturday, finished the qualifying heats of the 60-meter hurdles in 9.41 seconds. Hare was competing in her third event of the weekend, after running the 200 and competing in the long jump Friday.

Sunday should bring the Vikings more signs of promise, as more freshmen, along with other Vikingsm compete at the Portland Indoor Two at the Chiles Center.
