BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Portland State men's tennis team opened its conference slate on Friday afternoon, falling 5-2 to Sacramento State at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
The loss snapped the Vikings' three-match win streak as they fell to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in Big Sky play. The Hornets, who have won six of their last seven matches, improved to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
The Hornets took an early lead after securing a pair of doubles victories on courts one and three. Playing at No. 2 and looking for their fifth win of the season, Simon Kuszynski and Jonas Hembo Mathiasen held a 4-2 lead over Jan Silva and Adam Chodur before their match was cut short.
The teams traded points to open singles play. Following a Sacramento State win on court one, Andrin Zuellig brought the Vikings some life with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Patrick Wong on court six. The Hornets clinched the dual with back-to-back wins at No. 2 and 4 singles, before Luka Jovanovic earned his first-career Big Sky singles victory over Chodur, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 3. Gregory Gruenig, the Vikings' win leader, battled at the No. 5 spot, but was edged by Ori Maior 6-4, 7-6 (3) to end the day.
Hoping to bounce back tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 18), the Vikings will continue conference action against Idaho State at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (2 pm).
