BOSTON, Mass. — It's never too late to fulfill a New Year's resolution. Not even as the calendar turns to December. Several Vikings did just that Saturday as the Portland State track & field team opened its indoor season at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.
Â
Abdi Ibrahim set a personal best and a top 10 mark in the men's 3k Saturday while racing at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center. Ibrahim finished third in his heat in a time of 8:21.67, bettering his previous best of 8:22.71 from January earlier this year. Ibrahim remains at ninth all time within the Portland State record book, just four-hundredths of a second behind Michael Devenport, who ranks eighth at 8:21.63.
Â
Zach Grams ran in the same heat as Ibrahim and set another personal best with his finish in 8:45.63.
Â
Two more personal bests came in the women's mile, which opened the day for the Vikings.
Laura Beghin earned the largest improvement of the day, finishing the mile in 5:07.30. Beghin beat her prep best in the indoor 1,600 meters – a slightly shorter distance than the mile – by 16 seconds Saturday.
Â
Campbell Faust set her own personal best in the mile with a finish in 5:29.99, close to one and a half seconds better than her previous best.
Â
Freshman
Amir Ahmed nearly added a fifth personal best for the Vikings, as he ran the men's 800 meters in 1:58.91. That was only four-tenths of a second off his prep personal best outdoors despite Saturday marking his first collegiate indoor race.
Â
Abdinajib Abade joined Ahmed in the men's 800 meters, finishing in 2:00.61. That wasn't a personal best for Abade, but it was close to two seconds better than his last season-opening 800 meters, which came two years ago when he was running for New Mexico. Abade's 800-meter time also came after he had already run a mile earlier in the day where he finished in 4:29.02.
Â
Wendy Hare and
Weronika Stanczak, meanwhile, opened their indoor seasons in the women's 800 meters. Hare finished in 2:22.56, while Stanczak was close behind in 2:23.32. Stanczak's time was less than a second off her indoor best coming into her PSU career, no small feat considering the injuries Stanczak has endured while in college.
Â
The Vikings now have several weeks off for the end of term and holiday break. They'll return to competition on Jan. 13 when they head up north for the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle, Wash.
