MOSCOW, Idaho — The multis are back on the Park Blocks. Freshman
Wendy Hare completed the first pentathlon by a Viking since 2020 Friday at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open. Without a women's multi-event athlete since the start of the pandemic, Hare became the first Viking to complete a pentathlon since Kristen O'Handley in 2020.
Hare finished with 2,777 points in her debut pentathlon, placing 14th overall in the event. Hare scored best in the running events, posting 742 points in the opening 60-meter hurdles, then 803 points in the closing 800 meters. Hare's highest finish of the day also came in the 800 meters, where she placed second overall in a new PSU pentathlon record of 2:21.52.
Hare bettered the previous pentathlon record in the 800 meters by more than three seconds. Kristen O'Handley set the previous record at 2:24.90 at the same meet in 2019.
Chase Lovercheck was also in action Friday, as he placed fifth in the 1,000 meters in 2:32.08.
Lovercheck will return to the track Saturday for the 600 meters, where he'll race alongside teammates
James Bottrill and
Drew Seidel. Those three will run at 1:55 p.m. Saturday.
Ahliah Nordstrom is scheduled to open the day for the Vikings, as she competes in the shot put at 11 a.m.
And in case five events weren't enough for Hare, she's entered in three more on Saturday. She's scheduled to compete in the high jump, 60-meter hurdles and 600 meters.
What can we say? Hare is a multi now, after all.
