HILLSBORO, Ore. – Two goals weren't quite enough to propel the Portland State Women's soccer team past South Dakota as the match ended in a 2-2 draw at Hillsboro Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Vikings are now 1-2-1, while the Coyotes moved to 0-3-1 on the season.
Portland State's
Sienna Higinbotham struck early, netting the first goal of the day in the 14th minute to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. South Dakota responded quickly, scoring the equalizer off a corner kick in the 16th minute. Both defenses stepped up for the remainder of the first half as the score remained 1-1 at the break.
The Coyotes opened the second half with a flurry of shots, but Viking goalkeeper
Enya Hernandez held strong to keep the score tied. In the 53rd minute,
Abi Hoffman scored the go-ahead goal for the Vikings, netting her third of the season off an assist from
Chloe Huling. The Coyotes found the back of the net in the 76th minute to tie things at two, where the score remained for the final 14 minutes.
The Vikings tallied 12 shots in the match. Higinbotham and Hoffman led with three shots each. Hernandez and
Sidney O'billovich combined for a season-high ten saves as they split time in goal for PSU. Hernandez tallied a season-best six, while O'billovich had four.
Portland State will head on the road for the first time this season to take on New Mexico on Thursday, Sept. 1 (6:30 p.m. PT) and New Mexico State on Saturday, Sept. 3 (6 p.m. PT).
