Vikings Battle Their Way to 4-3 Victory Over Vandals

BEAVERTON, Ore. – A pair of singles wins down the stretch led the Portland State women's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Idaho on Monday at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.

The victory moved the Vikings to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in conference action while Idaho fell to 4-8 on the season and 2-1 in Big Sky play.

Proving just how dominant they are at line two, Emily Rees and Mariajose Hernandez Coronado locked in the first win of the afternoon for PSU, improving to 10-1 as a pair with a 6-3 win over Melissa Hutchet and Jayanne Palma. Capu Sanoner and Nika Beukers clinched the doubles point for the Vikings, picking up their tenth win of the season at No.1, 7-6 (2).

Hernandez Coronado put the Vikings on top 2-0 to begin singles action with a quick 6-2, 6-1 win over Saffron Dowse on court five. The Vandals battled back, gaining a 3-2 lead with three consecutive wins at the one, six and three spots, leaving the match up to Makoto Ohara and Beukers.

Ohara took care of business on court four, fighting off Andrea Redondo in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. The Vikings were in position to seal a victory, and Beukers was up to the challenge. The freshman battled her way to a gritty 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3 win at No. 2 to take the match 4-3.

"I was really tired entering the third set and having my teammates cheer me on definitely helped me get the win," Beukers said following the match. "Seeing Makoto win her match next to me also helped me push through. Overall we played really well as a team and the doubles point was especially important."
