BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State women's tennis team capped off the weekend with their first Big Sky Conference victory of the year, 6-1 over Montana at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.
The Vikings improved to 6-8 overall and 11-3 in Big Sky action, while Montana dropped to 5-11 and 0-4 against Conference opponents.
"I think we learned a lot from our match on Friday," senior
Emily Rees said. "I was proud of how everyone played, and I think we really came together as a team. We came out strong in doubles and were able to carry that momentum into singles. I'm really proud of how the freshmen competed today. I'm glad we could get them their first conference win."
All three doubles teams earned a victory to open the dual.
Capu Sanoner and
Nika Beukers defeated Ivayla Mitkova and Olivia Oosterbaan 6-3 at No. 1 to remain undefeated in Big Sky action.
Emily Rees and Mariajose Hernandez Coronado improved to 9-1 on the year with a 6-2 victory at the two spot. Putting together a solid performance at flight three was
Makoto Ohara and
Jacinta Milenkoski, who picked up their fourth-straight win as a duo, 6-2, to complete the sweep.
Ohara set the tone early in singles action, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Rosie Sterk on court five. Back-to-back wins from Milenkoski at No. 2 (6-2, 6-0) and Rees at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2) clinched the team victory for Portland State. Hernandez Coronado added to the Vikings' total at the six spot, securing a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Walker.
The focus shifted to courts one and three as both matches went to a ten-point third set. After dropping the first set 7-5 at the top spot, Sanoner stormed back to a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (4) win to put the Vikings up 6-0. Tasked with a tough battle against Lauren Dunlap on court three, Beukers eventually fell short 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8).
Portland State will return to action next Monday (March 21) against Idaho at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center (11 a.m.).
