BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team won the opening point of Friday's dual, but couldn't hang on as they fell to Montana State 4-3 at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.
The Vikings dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in conference action, while the Bobcats improved to 5-11 and 2-2 in Big Sky play.
"This was a very tough loss today because the team fought extremely hard," Head Coach Kyle Russell said. "Montana State is a tough team to put away and kudos to them for competing till the very end. Nonetheless, there's a lot to build on moving forward. I'm glad we're getting back on the court on Sunday."
The Vikings racked up three-straight victories in doubles action to begin the match. Nika Beukers and Capu Sanoner remained undefeated in conference play with a 6-2 win at No. 1. Mariajose Hernandez Coronado and Emily Rees improved to 8-1 as a duo with a 6-4 win at flight two, while Makoto Ohara and Jacinta Milenkoski completed the sweep with a 6-3 defeat on court three.
Hernandez Coronado gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead with the first singles point of the day, cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6. After an MSU victory on court four, Sanoner clinched her fourth win of the season at the top spot, 6-3, 6-2 to extend PSU's lead to 3-1.
With their backs against the wall, the Bobcats rallied to a trio of wins on courts two, five, and three to clinch the dual, including back-to-back three-set victories to end the day.
