RAMONA, Cali. – The Portland State women's tennis team earned a 4-1 victory over San Diego Christian on Thursday.
The win improved the Vikings to 2-2 while the Hawks dropped to 0-1 to begin their season.
"Our team had to overcome a lot of hurdles today," Head Coach
Kyle Russell said. "I wouldn't have challenged them if I didn't think they could rise to the occasion. We flew out in the morning to drive straight to our match, go outside for the first time, and battled the conditions. They responded incredibly and handled it great to get the win. That was a team that is used to winning, and they threw everything at us."
The unfamiliar conditions didn't phase the Vikings, opening the match with a pair of doubles wins to go ahead 1-0. Mariajose Hernandez Coronado and
Emily Rees earned their first victory at the No. 1 spot to remain undefeated on the season.
Makoto Ohara and
Nika Beukers followed, securing the opening point with a 6-1 at No. 2, leaving the remaining match unfinished.
Jacinta Milenkoski got things started for the Vikings in singles action, notching a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, while Hernandez Coronado followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory of her own at line five. The Hawks got on the board with a victory at No. 2, but it was Ohara that sealed the deal for Portland State at the top spot, battling to a three-set win over Anthea Weiland (6-2, 2-6, 7-5).
