Vikings Drop Big Sky Opener To Bengals

POCATELLO, Idaho – Despite securing the doubles point for the eighth consecutive match, the Portland State women's tennis team fell to Idaho State 6-1 in its Big Sky opener on Friday.

The Vikings fell to 4-5 overall while the Bengals improved to 5-1.

In doubles action, Portland State gave the Bengals all they could handle, pulling off a pair of tight victories to clinch the opening point. Nika Beukers and Capu Sanoner captured their sixth-straight win at No. 1, defeating Leah Kuruvilla and Hana Cho 7-6. Emily Rees and Makoto Ohara did the same on court three, battling their way to a 7-6 win over Sol and Lola O'Lideadha.

The Bengals challenged the Vikings from top to bottom in singles action, securing all six matches along the way. Sanoner pushed Cho to three sets on court three before falling 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. Mariajose Hernandez Coronado gave the Vikings their best shot at a win in the sixth spot before Alexandra Arkhipov battled back to a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory.

The Vikings will travel to Ogden, Utah on Sunday to take on Weber State at 10 a.m.
