Vikings Blank Redhawks 7-0

BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team moved to .500 on the season with a 7-0 win over Seattle University on Friday at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.

The win improved the Vikings to 3-3 overall while the Redhawks dropped to 0-5 on the year.

Nika Beukers and Capu Sanoner got things started for Portland State at No. 1 doubles, making quick work of their Seattle opponents with a 6-2 victory. To no surprise, undefeated duo Emily Rees and Mariajose Hernandez Coronado secured the opening point for the Vikings at the No. 2 spot with their sixth-straight.

Rees kicked off singles action with a dominant 6-4, 6-0 defeat of Seattle's Alisa Sabotic, extending PSU's lead to two. Also picking up straight-set wins were Hernandez Coronado at No. 5 (6-4, 6-3), Makoto Ohara at No. 4 (6-2, 6-4), and Beukers at No. 2 (6-4,6-4).

After watching from the sideline last week, a healthy Capu Sanoner was able to re-join her teammates against the Redhawks this afternoon. With the help of a gutsy 7-5 first-set win, Sanoner earned her first-career victory at No. 1 singles (7-5, 6-4) over Seattle's Liliya Dimova.

"I was pretty nervous coming into the match since I haven't gotten a lot of practice in this week," Sanoner said. "But my teammates stayed by my side and helped me get my first win as the number one. We are playing and winning as a team, fighting for each other, and at the end of the day we got the sweep."

Maddie Egan completed the sweep for the Vikings on court six with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over Hannah Grossman.

Portland State will return to action Sunday when they host UC Irvine at Tualatin Hills (10 a.m.).
