Vikings Draw Eagles on the Road

CHENEY, Wash. – Despite scoring less than two minutes into the match, the Portland State women's soccer team couldn't hold on to its lead as they tied Eastern Washington 1-1 at the EWU Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.

After entering the weekend at the top of the Big Sky standings, the Vikings now sit in third with 14 points, one point behind Northern Arizona and Idaho who are tied for first. The regular-season title is still up for grabs as the Big Sky teams head into the final weekend of play next week.

Sunday's tie marked the Vikings' fifth draw of the season as they moved to 5-6-5 overall and 4-1-2 in conference action. The Eagles moved to 5-7-5 on the year and 2-2-3 in Big Sky action.

Portland State's Abi Hoffman netted her fourth penalty kick of the season less than two minutes into the match to give the Vikings the lead. The Eagles tied things in the 26th minute off a header from Maddie Morgan. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, despite combining for 31 shots. PSU's Chloe Huling fired off back-to-back shots in the final two minutes of action but couldn't find the net as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Sidney O'billovich was solid in goal for the Vikings, allowing just one goal despite 19 shots from the Eagles. The Portland, Ore. native finished the day with a season-high nine saves. The Vikings tallied 13 shots as Huling led the way with five attempts.

Portland State's hopes at a regular-season title are still alive heading into next weekend's regular season finale. The Vikings will travel to Flagstaff next Sunday, October 23rd to take on first-place Northern Arizona (11:05 am PT).
