BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team earned its first victory of the 2022 season with a 7-0 sweep of Linfield on Saturday at Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.
The Vikings improved to 1-0 while the Wildcats fell to 0-1.
"It was a great atmosphere after our close match yesterday, and everyone battled to get our first win of the season at our home courts," sophomore Maddie Egan said. "The doubles teams came out ready to fight. Jacinta and I played really well to pick up the 6-2 win."
Portland State made quick work of its doubles opponents to take an early 1-0 lead. Emily Rees and Mariajose Hernandez Coronado posted their third consecutive win at No. 2 (6-0) before Nika Beukers, and Capu Sanoner secured the doubles point for PSU with a 6-0 victory over Lexi Matsunaga and Tessa Kern at No. 1. Jacinta Milenkoski and Maddie Egan completed the doubles sweep for the Vikings on court three, defeating Allena Wong and Emma Tuttle 6-2.
Beukers and Rees added to the Vikings lead with a pair of wins to open singles action. Beukers swept Sarah Forester 6-0, 6-0, while Rees earned a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory over Taryn Fujimori.
Milenkoski posted a 6-4, 6-1 against her Wildcat opponent at the No. 2 spot followed by a decisive victory on court six from Hernandez (6-4, 6-1). Egan was put to the test at No. 1 in the opening set but came back dominant on the back end to earn her first win as a Viking 7-5, 6-1 to clinch the Viking sweep.
Portland State will travel to California next week to take on San Diego Christian College (Feb. 3) and Point Loma (Feb. 4).
