BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team dropped a tight 4-3 dual to Portland on Friday afternoon at Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.
The loss dropped the Vikings to 0-2 while UP moved to 1-0.
"We battled hard today," Head Coach
Kyle Russell said. "Even though we didn't come out on top, it was really important for us to compete in a close match because that's how it's going to be all year long."
PSU secured the first point of the day with a pair of doubles wins at the top two spots.
Emily Rees and Mariajose Hernandez Coronado notched their second consecutive victory of the season with a 6-3 win at No. 2, while
Capu Sanoner and
Nika Beukers posted a 6-3 victory of their own at No. 1.
Securing the first win of her collegiate career at No. 4 singles (7-5, 6-4), Beukers gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead to begin singles action. After the Pilots locked in a pair of wins at the No. 5 and 2 spots, Rees put Portland State back on top after defeating t line three (6-4, 6-3).
Despite holding the lead in set two, Sanoner ultimately fell to Portland's Iva Zelic in a battle at the No. 1 spot (7-5, 7-6 (10-8)).
UP's Jana Tanevska clinched the match for the Pilots after pulling off a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over
Makoto Ohara.
The Vikings will look for a bounce-back win tomorrow afternoon when they host Linfield to close out the weekend (11 a.m.).
