EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team opened its 2022 season Sunday afternoon, falling to Oregon 7-0.
The Ducks claimed the opening point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but were unable to complete the sweep thanks to a victory from Emily Rees and Mariajose Hernandez Coronado at No. 2. The freshman-senior duo handed Oregon's Myah Petchey and Allison Mulville a 6-2 loss to lock in the Vikings first doubles win of the season.
Highlighting PSU in singles play was freshman Nika Beukers. Making her collegiate debut at No. 4 singles, Beukers pushed Oregon's Ares Teixido Garcia to the limit but was unable to pull off the win, falling 6-4, 6-7(1), 0-1 (4).
Playing in the top spot for the Vikings, Capu Sanoner couldn't solve Oregon's No. 1 Sophie Luescher, dropping her match 3-6, 2-6, while Rees put up a fight on court three, earning three-straight wins in the second set before eventually falling 4-6, 4-6 to Lillian Mould.
The Vikings will return to action on Friday, Jan. 28. when they take on crosstown rival Portland in their home opener at Tualatin Hills Park & Rec (11 a.m.).
