Portland State Football Coach Bruce Barnum has added four new coaches and additional support staff for the 2021 season. Featured among them is a local legend in high school coaching with the addition of Jon Eagle, a veteran of nearly three decades of collegiate coaching Mark Rhea, one of the greatest receivers in Pac-12 history Derek Hagan, and a member of a storied football family who has worked around the game for nearly 20 years, John Brock.

"This is the best coaching staff I have had since I have been here," said Barnum. "The knowledge, the experience, the wins they bring to our program… they are all great teachers and great people. I'm most happy we can have a staff this strong for the players in our program."

Eagle will be the Vikings quarterbacks coach. He most recently coached at Camas (WA) High School, where his teams won two class 4A state titles in the past five years. 

Rhea has had a long-time coaching relationship with Barnum. He worked most recently at Western Carolina and spent time on the same staff as Barnum at Idaho State and the United States Coast Guard Academy. Rhea will coach the defensive line.

Hagan is a nine-year NFL veteran as a wide receiver. He returned to his alma mater of Arizona State to join that staff in 2017, becoming co-wide receivers and tight ends coach in 2019. Hagan will coach wide receivers for the Vikings.

Brock has six seasons of experience in collegiate football, working at Army. He has specialized in coaching on the defensive side, recruiting and player personnel. Brock will be a defensive assistant and recruiting coordinator for the Vikings.

Coach Barnum has also added Colby Davies, former head coach at Steilacoom High School. He will work in quality control for the Vikings, as will Jared Hilbers. Marcus Gray will be a graduate assistant on offense, while former Viking quarterback Kieran McDonough will be a student assistant on defense.

These staff additions have also altered a few roles on the returning staff. Skyler Fulton takes over as offensive coordinator in 2021. Matt Leunen will be the offensive line coach. Jason Diffee will focus specifically on special teams.
