COLLEGE STATION, Texas — It was about 22 hours after he planned, but
Josh Snyder put in a solid debut on the NCAA West Prelims stage while placing ninth in his heat of the steeplechase Saturday.
Â
Snyder and a load of other athletes got delayed when weather canceled all but a few events at the NCAA West Preliminary yesterday at Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium. The wait didn't seem to affect Snyder, however, as he passed three runners in the final two laps to finish in 9:03.32.
Â
Snyder's time marked the second fastest ever by a Viking in the steeplechase, trailing only Snyder's own school record of 8:56.64 at the Oregon Relays on April 23. Snyder broke a 39-year-old school record in his first race of the season, and dipped under that mark in all three of his races at sea level this season.
Â
Saturday not only marked Snyder's debut at the NCAA West Prelims, but also the Vikings' debut at the stage in the men's steeplechase. No Viking before Snyder had ever qualified for the meet in the men's steeplechase, while only Sarah Medved (2018, 2019) had qualified previously in the women's steeplechase. Snyder will have two more years potentially to return to the meet, as the canceled 2020 outdoor season means Snyder remains only a sophomore athletically.
