PHOENIX - The Portland State women's tennis team was unable to fend off the No. 1 seed Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in the Big Sky semifinals, dropping a 4-0 decision at the Phoenix Tennis Center on Saturday.

Northern Arizona earned the first win of the day at No. 2 doubles when Elinor Beazley and Gina Dittmann defeated Lotti Meszaros and Emily Rees 6-1. The Vikings gave themselves a chance at the opening point when Ashley Ramirez and Gerda Upeniece earned a 6-1 victory at line three, leaving the deciding in the hands of Capu Sanoner and Makoto Ohara. The dominant freshman duo battled but came up just short as they were edged out 7-5 by Ellie Millard and Mimi Bland.

With Northern Arizona holding a 1-0 lead heading into singles action, the Vikings needed to clinch four matches to advance to the Championship. The Lumberjacks locked in their second point of the day, defeating Ohara at No. 3 6-1, 6-1.

Competing at the No. 1 spot for just the second time this season, Capu Sanoner was the second Viking to fall as she came up short in a 6-3, 6-3 fight against Gina Dittmann.

The Lumberjacks earned the fourth and final point of the day at line six, using a 6-4, 6-4 win over Upeniece to clinch the 4-0 win.

The remaining three matches were left unfinished. Ramirez held a comfortable lead at No. 5 when the dual was called. Emily Rees trailed in the four spot while Meszaros had battled her way to a third set on court two.

The Vikings ended their season at 9-11 overall while the Lumberjacks improved to 13-4 on the season.
