CORVALLIS, Ore. — Luke Ramirez defended his turf.
Four teammates invaded his preferred discipline – the 1,500 meters – at the OSU High Performance Meet Friday, and Ramirez fought them all off to claim internal bragging rights on the Portland State track & field team.
The junior, who has been the Vikings' top dog in the 1,500 meters all season, remained on top while setting a new personal best of 3:50.77. More importantly, Ramirez cracked 3:51 for the first time after three straight meets hovering just above the mark. Ramirez remains sixth all-time in the 1,500 meters at Portland State, as well as the Vikings' fastest 1,500-meter runner since 2004.
Ramirez's teammates made sure he earned it, too, as his section of the 1,500 meters produced four of the 10 personal bests the Vikings saw Friday on what turned into a strong day for the program overall.
Josh Snyder led the group behind Ramirez, as the Vikings' record holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase stepped down in distance to work on speed ahead of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Snyder finished in 3:52.98, beating his prep personal best in the 1,500 meters by more than 11 seconds.
Sam Lingwall and
James Bottrill also both set personal bests of their own in the 1,500 meters. Lingwall shaved two more seconds off his time in the 1,500 while finishing in 3:54.01, continuing his season-long improvement at the distance. Lingwall opened his season with a time of 4:00.28, then ran 3:56.41 at the Lewis & Clark Invite two weeks ago, before dropping that time further Friday.
Bottrill only opened his season last week at the Oregon Relays, where he ran the 800 meters. Bottrill will run the 800 again tomorrow, but turned his attention to the 1,500 today and finished with a two-and-a-half-second personal best of 3:56.23.
Ian Vickstrom competed in a different section of the 1,500 meters, but still posted a huge personal best to continue the trend for the Vikings. Vickstrom was in a class by himself within his section of the race, as he took the lead after the first lap and crushed the field by more than six seconds. Vickstrom won his section in 4:00.74, bettering his prep personal best that he came into Portland State with by close to nine seconds.
Kaila Gibson set her own personal best in the invitational section of the women's 1,500 meters, finishing in 4:31.67. Gibson's time moved her up one slot to seventh all-time in the 1,500 meters at Portland State, one of three top 10s in which Gibson ranks outdoors in addition to the 5,000 (6th) and 10,000 (2nd) meters.
Phoebe Brown entered the all-time top 10 in the steeplechase Friday, moving up to fourth all-time with her finish in 11:16.99. Brown's time Friday marked an 11-second personal best and close to a 22-second seasonal best over her opener at the NW Distance Jamboree earlier this month.
Tatum Miller and
Monica Salazar added two more personal bests on the women's side, as they finished the open section of the 5,000 meters in 17:49.51 and 18:23.83, respectively. Miller's time marked an eight-second improvement over her time at the NW Distance Jamboree, and moved her up to fifth all-time in the freshman rankings at Portland State. Meanwhile, Salazar's time marked a 47-second improvement over her previous best, which came on the same track at the OSU PNW Team Clash on March 13.
Evan Peters cracked 15 minutes in the men's 5k, becoming the seventh different Viking to break the barrier this season. Peters finished well below the time in 14:48.48, ranking him fourth on the team in the event this season.
Truett Bostwick, another one of the Vikings to crack 15 minutes in the 5k, crossed the line in 15:03.09.
Kelly Shedd, who ran in a different section of the race, was also near his personal best while finishing in 15:49.25.
Zach Grams and
Erik Solano ran in Shedd's section of the race and finished in 16:13.44 and 16:16.92, respectively.
Jordan Gloden opened the day for the Vikings with a seasonal best of 57.82 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. It was a fitting gift for Gloden, who was competing on his birthday Friday.
Gloden will return to the track tomorrow for the 110-meter hurdles as the Vikings continue at the OSU High Performance Meet Saturday. Besides Gloden, the Vikings also have entries in the men's 400 and 800 meters, as well as the men's javelin.
