CHENEY, Wash. – Coming off a thrilling victory against Idaho on Friday, the Portland State women's tennis team put themselves in a position to do the same at EWU but fell short in a 4-3 decision on Sunday.
The loss marks the first of the season in Big Sky action for the Vikings as they fall to 3-1 in Conference play and 8-10 overall.
"The team came out and showed a lot of toughness," Head Coach Kyle Russell said. "This is one of the hardest places to play a tennis match in the country. They didn't make any excuses and put themselves in a position to win the match. We came up just short but showed a lot of grit like they have done all season."
The Vikings came out strong in doubles action as they have done nearly every match this season. Capu Sanoner and Makoto Ohara were put to the test at the top spot but to no surprise, battled their way to a 7-5 win, the duo's 10th of the season.
Emily Rees and Lotti Meszaros got the job done at No. 2 with a 6-1 victory to lock in the first point for the Vikings.
Rees began singles play cruising to a 6-4, 6-1 win on court four before Sanoner toughed out a 7-5, 6-2 battle in the second spot. Needing just one more point, the Vikings' fight came up short as both Ramirez and Meszaros were barely edged out by their Eagle opponents. Meszaros fell 7-6, 7-6 at line one while Ramirez dropped a 7-5, 7-5 decision on court five to close out the dual.
