HILLSBORO – The Portland State women's soccer team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday as a double-overtime penalty kick lifted Sacramento State to a 2-1 victory.
The Vikings honored the seven members of their 2021 Senior Class before the match. Emilee Greve, Paige Donathan, Kasey Isobe, Tasi Poore, Teá Poore, Molly Joyce, and Van Winstone each suited up for the final time at Hillsboro Stadium in the season finale.
The match began with a feel-good moment as the Hornets threw away their opening kick-off to allow an injured Viking senior, Molly Joyce make one final appearance on the field. The Brookings, Ore. native returned to the sideline following the turnover and was greeted by a slew of teammates. Â
An energized Portland State squad made their presence known early as they fired off three shots in the opening seven minutes of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Enya Hernandez put on a stellar performance in goal, as she tallied five saves in the opening 45 minutes.
As time expired, the Vikings and Hornets headed to the break scoreless for the second consecutive match.
Paige Donathan and Raniyah Burton set the tone for the Vikings early in the second half, putting back-to-back shots on goal.
In the 61st minute, Chloe Huling sent a beauty towards the top corner of the goal but a leaping Aaaliyah Fesili was there to save the day for the Hornets, tipping the ball out of bounds to give the Vikings a corner kick.
Sofi Papastamos was the one to send the ball in from the top corner as she placed it perfectly inside the box to Donathan. Donathan's initial attempt ricocheted off a Hornet defender and landed right back in front of the senior. Donathan fired off another shot, this time dodging the defender and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Viking lead.
Sacramento State saw several opportunities but was unable to squeeze the ball past Hernandez for the majority of the half. In the 83rd minute, the Hornets capitalized on a penalty kick, scoring the equalizer with seven minutes remaining in regulation.
Fending off last-minute threats from the Hornets, the Vikings headed into their first overtime of the season. Papastamos was the only player on either team to record a shot in the initial overtime before time expired.
The Hornets sealed the deal less than four minutes into the second overtime as they drew another foul inside of the box. Sacramento State's Aubrey Goodwill snuck the penalty kick past a diving Hernandez to lock in the 2-1 win.
Hernandez finished the contest with a season-high eight saves while the Vikings tallied a season-high 13 total shots.
The Vikings finished the shortened 2020-21 season at 0-8-0. Katie Burton and her squad will return in the fall with a few new faces, excited for a full season and fresh start.
