Viking Comeback Falls Short In One-Run Loss To Grizzlies

HILLSBORO – The Portland State softball team found itself on the losing end of yet another one-run ballgame on Sunday, as its 9-8 loss to Montana marked the Vikings' fourth game of the week decided by a single run.

Portland State saw its first lead of the series at 1-0 after Rachel Menlove notched her third RBI of the weekend to score Marissa Bruno in the first inning.

The Grizzlies responded with four runs in the top of the second leading to an early 4-1 lead. Maddie Thompson chipped away at the Grizzlies' advantage in the following frame, reaching on a fielder's choice to score Ari Abalos.

Montana added to its total with a pair of runs in the fourth inning but the Vikings fired back in the bottom half of the inning with a second RBI from Thompson. With two outs and two on, Tayler Gunesch came up big with a clutch RBI double to left-center, cutting the Grizzlies lead to one at 6-5.

Scoring on a Montana passed ball, Alexa Cepeda knotted the game at six in the bottom half of the fifth but the Grizzlies shifted the momentum back to their side in the sixth, thanks to a three-run home run to make it 9-6.

Hannah Bell and Emily Johansen drove in the final two runs for the Vikings in the sixth before the Grizzlies held the PSU offense scoreless to close out the series.

Allicitie Frost got her second start of the weekend for the Vikings, lasting 1.2 innings in the circle. The Grizzlies saw three more pitchers in the contest but it was Katie Schroeder who took the loss, tossing 3.1 innings while giving up three runs.

Making her first appearance at the top of the record book, Bruno notched her 10th career triple in the fourth inning which tied the program's division I era all-time record for career triples. Bruno is now tied with Kiauna Anderson who has been the lone record holder since 2001.

Menlove, Gunesch, and Cepeda all had multi-hit games for the Vikings while five others earned hits against the Grizzlies. Menlove will enter next weekend riding a six-game RBI streak.
