LA JOLLA, Cali. – Competing in their first outdoor dual match of the season, the Portland State women's tennis team fell to UC San Diego 4-1 on Monday afternoon.
Â
The Vikings dropped to 5-5 on the season while the Tritons earned their first victory of the season, improving to 2-1 overall.
Â
Portland State came out strong, securing a 1-0 lead after a pair of doubles victories. At the No. 2 position,
Emily Rees and
Lotti Meszaros picked up a 6-2 win for the Vikings while
Capu Sanoner and
Makoto Ohara locked in a 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot.
Â
Entering the week after winning six-straight, Ohara was unable to compete in singles play, resulting in a withdrawal due to injury in the No. 6 spot to tie things at one. The Tritons were able to pick up three more victories in singles action on courts 5, 2 and 3, to clinch the 4-1 victory. The remaining two matches at No. 1 and No. 4 were declared unfinished.
"Going outside for the first time was going to be tough," Head Coach
Kyle Russell said. "The team did their best and I was hoping we could find our games in time. I was very proud of the way Capu threw Makoto on her shoulders and helped us win the doubles point. Ashley and Lotti also showed a lot of grit coming back in their matches. I'm looking forward to getting back on the court tomorrow."
