PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland State head coach
David Hepburn billed Saturday's Lewis & Clark Spring Break Classic as a speed day, and that's precisely what Hepburn and the Vikings got.
Â
The Vikings sent 15 athletes to the line between the men's and women's 1,500 meters, and 13 of those 15 runners set either a personal best in the event or beat their 1,600-meter personal best by 14 seconds or more. Additionally, three different Vikings moved into the freshman top 10 at Portland State in the 1,500 meters, going back to the first year freshman records were counted in 2003.
Â
Tatum Miller moved up to ninth all-time in the freshman 1,500-meter rankings as she led a group of four Vikings in the women's 1,500 meters. Miller crossed the line in second in 4:45.21, 18 seconds faster than her prep personal best in the 1,600 meters.
Cam McChesney and
Truett Bostwick also entered the freshman men's top 10, sliding into seven and eighth all-time, respectively, while finishing in 4:00.86 and 4:01.26.
Â
Sophie Jones followed Miller on the women's side, as she finished 28 seconds under her 1,600-meter personal best in 4:48.55.
Phoebe Brown and
Monica Salazar both had 1,500-meter personal bests to compare against, and those comparisons proved favorable as both runners shaved chunks of time off their previous bests. Brown finished in 4:55.79 to knock two seconds off her old time, while Salazar chopped 13 seconds off her prep personal best while cracking five minutes for the first time in 4:58.10.
Â
Sam Lingwall led the Viking men with an eighth-place finish in 4:00.28, crossing the line 22 seconds faster than his prep personal best in the 1,600 meters.
Evan Peters placed as the Viking men's fourth runner Saturday, finishing in 4:01.90 to knock 22 seconds off his prep PB in the 1,600 meters. Peters' classmate
Brandon Hippe followed him while knocking 22 seconds off his own prep personal best in the 1,600 meters with a 1,500-meter time of 4:06.15.
Â
Kelly Shedd won his heat of the 1,500 meters in 4:06.72, six seconds faster than his prep personal best in the event and three seconds faster than the next-closest finisher in his heat.
Â
Zac Witman finished in 4:08.12, 14 seconds faster than his prep personal best in the 1,600 meters.
Jack Rubalcave and Luke Fisher also set new personal bests in the 1,500 meters while finishing in 4:10.03 and 4:11.73, respectively.Â
Â
Outside of the distance runners,
Jordan Gloden swept the 110- and 400-meter hurdles Saturday, finishing first in both events in 15.56 and 58.51 seconds, respectively. Gloden finished more than two seconds ahead of his closest competition in the 400-meter hurdles.
Â
Rashid Muse also made his Portland State debut Saturday, finishing third in the 400 meters in 53.39 seconds.
