SEATTLE – The Portland State softball team dropped its final game of the Husky Classic 5-2 to the eighth-ranked Washington Huskies on Sunday.
After suffering a series of late-inning rallies the Vikings stood their ground today, allowing just a single run in the final three innings of action.
The powerful Husky offense did most of their damage in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs to open the game.
Notching four base hits, the Portland State offense had the recipe for a big third inning but was only able to push one across. Freshman Maddie Thompson was the lone Viking to cash in an RBI before the Huskies escaped the bases-loaded jam.
Marissa Bruno added another run for the Vikings' after an RBI double scored Alexa Cepeda to cut the Husky lead to two.
A Washington home run in the bottom of the fifth was the final scoring play of the afternoon, as they took a 5-2 lead before shutting down the Vikings for the remainder of the contest.
Bruno ended the game with a team-high two hits in addition to one RBI.
Olivia Grey, Allicitie Frost, and Marisol Gaona all made appearances in the circle for Portland State, with Gaona leading the way. The Sophomore tossed the final 4.1 innings, allowing just one earned run off three base hits.
Portland State will play its home opener against Simpson University in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 18 (3 & 5 p.m.)
