HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team failed to overcome a first-half goal by Eastern Washington on Friday, falling 1-0.
The Vikings dropped to 3-7-1 on the year and 1-2-1 in Big Sky action. The Eagles improved to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Both teams pressed early, combining for four shots in the opening six minutes of action.
After back-to-back shots from Raniyah Burton and Ani Jensen, the Eagles shifted momentum to their side by scoring the lone goal of the game in the 22nd minute. The Vikings battled back with three consecutive shots on target but couldn't get any past Eagle goalkeeper Kelsee Winston.
The shooting spree continued into the second half for Portland State. Still trailing 1-0, the Vikings fired off a series of four shots in eight minutes without success. A pair of looks down the stretch by Burton and Abi Hoffman was the last of the Vikings' 12 chances in the half, as the clock expired and the Eagles secured the 1-0 victory.
Portland State held a significant possession advantage, firing off a season-high 20 shots to the Eagles 11. Hoffman ended the contest with a season-best seven shots putting three of those on target. O'bliiovich was solid in goal for PSU, recording five saves.
The Vikings will shift their focus to Sunday as they're set to take on Idaho in a 1 pm matchup at Hillsboro Stadium.
