The Portland State Women's Golf team has been tabbed to place fourth in the 11-team Big Sky Conference this season in a polling of league coaches. The Vikings received one first-place vote.
Â
2019 Defending Big Sky Champion Sacramento State was picked first again this season by the coaches, receiving nine of 11 first-place votes. Idaho, Northern Arizona and Portland State followed in the polling. The Vikings and fifth-place Eastern Washington each received a first-place vote.
Â
Portland State tied for fourth in the 2019 Big Sky Championship (there was no tournament in 2020 due to COVID). PSU was third each of the two previous seasons.
Â
Because of the pandemic, the NCAA granted spring sport student-athletes an additional year of eligibility. That allowed Viking stars (and 2019-20 seniors)
Valerie Hernandez and
Jasmine Cabajar the opportunity to return and compete. Those two will lead a deeper squad during the spring 2021 season.
Â
Hernandez had a 74.17 scoring average last year before play was halted due to COVID. Cabajar was at 74.58 strokes per round. They are both three-time All-Big Sky honorees.
Â
Unfortunately, junior
Windy Huang (77.58) will not be able to play in the spring due to injury. However, junior
McKenna Maser (formerly Vanko, 78.53) and freshman
Katie Harris (78.83) both return, as does junior
Iliana Telles. The Vikings have added three outstanding freshmen in
Mariana Garcia Rosette,
Mari Nakamura and
Franca Polla.
Â
PSU will have a shortened spring season, beginning competition on Mar. 22-24 at the Maui Invitational. Following that will be the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic and Fresno State Classic. The Big Sky Championship takes place Apr. 19-21 at Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla, OR. It marks the first time the Big Sky Championship will be held in the state of Oregon.
Â
Portland State is a seven-time Big Sky Conference Champion, winning titles in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011 and in 2014 under current Head Coach
Kailin Downs.
