Portland State Athletics has officially released its 2020 football schedule featuring a pair of Pac-12 opponents and four FCS playoff teams.
The Vikings will host five FCS opponents at Hillsboro Stadium and play six games on the road in 2020.
The schedule will be as challenging as ever as PSU will play two Pac-12 teams to open the season. It marks the first time since 2014 that Portland State has played two Pac-12 members in the same season. The Vikings will be on the road to play Arizona for the first time in program history on Sept. 5.
After a bye week, Portland State goes down Interstate 5 to face Oregon State. It will be the first meeting between the Vikings and Beavers since 2017. In that game, PSU took OSU to the final seconds before losing, 35-32. The Beavers have taken five all-time meetings between the programs.
On Sept. 26, Portland State will have its home opener against Montana State. The Bobcats were an FCS semifinalist in 2019, finishing with an 11-4 record. The teams last met in 2018, a 43-23 MSU victory. Montana State leads the Big Sky Conference series, 14-7.
The Vikings are on the road the following two weeks, playing at Southern Utah (Oct. 3) and Idaho (Oct. 10). Portland State took home wins against both programs in 2019, beating the Thunderbirds, 52-31, and the Vandals, 24-0. PSU leads the all-time series with Southern Utah, 10-4, and trails the series with Idaho, 12-2.
Portland State remains at home for the rest of October, playing three straight at Hillsboro Stadium. The last time the Vikings had three in a row at home was the final two games of the 2015 season, followed by an FCS playoff game with Northern Iowa.
On Oct. 17, PSU hosts Idaho State. The Bengals beat the Vikings 51-24 last year in Pocatello. ISU leads the all-time series, 26-18-1, and the Big Sky series is tied 12-12.
The second FCS playoff team from 2019 comes to town on Oct. 24 when Portland State hosts North Dakota. No longer a member of the Big Sky Conference, PSU and UND will be meeting in a non-conference game. The last matchup was a 17-10 Fighting Hawks' win in Grand Forks in 2018.
Portland State will meet Cal Poly for the first time since 2017 when they clash in a Hallowe'en game. The Mustangs won the last meeting, 35-28 in San Luis Obispo, and lead the all-time series, 13-11.
November brings as challenging a schedule as ever when Portland State meets the 2019 Big Sky Conference co-champions on consecutive weeks on the road. PSU goes to Weber State on Nov. 7. The Wildcats were also FCS semifinalists, going 11-4 in 2019, 7-1 in the Big Sky. The teams will be meeting for the first time since 2017.
Sacramento State will host Portland State on Nov. 14. The Hornets were surprise co-champions in 2019, going 9-4 overall, 7-1 in the Big Sky. PSU won the last meeting between the schools in 2018, 41-14, in Sacramento. The Vikings lead the all-time series, 23-12.
Portland State hosts the regular season finale on Friday night, Nov. 20, against Eastern Washington. The Eagles won a shootout with the Vikings, 53-46, last fall in Cheney. The Eagles hold a slight edge in the series, 21-20-1.
Kickoff times and televised games will be announced later this year.
2020 SCHEDULE NOTES
• This will be the 74th season of Portland State football (1947) and 25
th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference.
• Portland State will be playing two FBS programs in a season for the 11
th time in its history and the seventh year in a row. The Vikings will play two Pac-12 schools in the same season for the fourth time in history. PSU has never played Arizona, and will face Oregon State for the sixth time. PSU is 4-38 all-time against FBS programs. The Vikings are 1-17 against the Pac-12. The lone win was a 24-17 victory at Washington State in 2015.
• Year in and year out Portland State football has one of the most challenging Football Championship Subdivision schedules in the country, and 2020 will be no different. In addition to playing FBS programs Arizona and Oregon State, the Vikings will play four 2019 FCS playoff teams (Montana State, North Dakota, Weber State and Sacramento State). Weber State and Sacramento State were co-Big Sky Champions. Montana State and Weber State each reached the FCS semifinals. Weber State (3
rd), Montana State (4
th) and Sacramento State (9
th) all finished in the top 10 in the final FCS poll.
• PSU faces only four teams in 2020 that were on the schedule in 2019 (Southern Utah, Idaho, Idaho State and Eastern Washington).
• Portland State will play three straight regular season home games in a season for the first time since the first three games of the 2003 season.
• Portland State will not play a lower division program in 2020. The Vikings are now 18-0 in games against lower division opponents since moving to Division I in 1996.
• In the Big Sky Conference's unusual 13-team format in 2020, Portland State faces just eight of the other 12 members. PSU will miss Big Sky schools Montana, UC Davis, Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado on its schedule in 2020.
