POCATELLO, Idaho — Last spring, sophomore
Chase Lovercheck surprised the 800-meter field by placing third at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Saturday, Lovercheck solidified himself as an 800-meter contender for years to come while scoring for the Vikings in the event for the second straight conference championship.
Â
Lovercheck placed sixth in the 800 meters Saturday, finishing in 1:56.00 at the Big Sky Indoor Championships at Idaho State's Holt Arena. Lovercheck moved up to fourth between the second and third laps, and was still in fourth at the bell before other runners passed him.
Â
Fifth-year senior
Kaila Gibson tried to give the Viking women a scorer in the 3,000 meters, but placed 10th in 10:03.89.
Miranda Ross also ran the 3,000 meters Saturday, finishing 31st overall in 11:04.69.
Â
Three Vikings competed on the men's side of the 3,000 meters, with
Ian Vickstrom leading the pack at 32nd overall in 8:53.73.
Josh Snyder and
Zac Witman followed at 38th and 39th, respectively, while finishing in 9:15.66 and 9:22.82.
Â
Liam Jemison and
Garrett Vasta also ran in the men's mile Saturday, finishing 19th and 23rd, respectively, in times of 4:27.11 and 4:47.01. Jemison's time marked his second-best finish in the indoor mile in his career, even though Pocatello stands at over 4,000 feet of elevation.
Â
The Vikings have three weeks off before they compete again at the L&C Spring Break Open on March 21. The Vikings will open their outdoor season at the meet.

SEATTLE, Wash. — The non-conference crew shined for the second straight week, adding eight personal bests at the SPU Final Qualifier Saturday after going 14-for-14 six days earlier at the Portland Indoor Three.
Â
Kameron Smith dipped below eight seconds in the 60 meters for the first time in her career Saturday, giving her a personal best in the event for the second straight week. Smith finished in 7.97 seconds at the SPU Final Qualifier, bettering the time she set at 8.01 seconds last week.Â
Â
Carissa Rodriguez shaved close to four seconds off her personal best in the 800 meters while finishing in 2:29.93. Rodriguez set her previous best five weeks ago at the Portland Indoor One on Jan. 26.
Â
Two more personal bests came in the mile as
Mitchell Tolander and
Keely Wolf bettered their times in the men's and women's mile. Tolander placed second in his section of the men's mile, finishing in 4:30.46 to better his old best by more than nine seconds. Wolf posted an even bigger personal best in the women's race, finishing in 5:25.75 to beat her previous best by close to 18 seconds.
Â
Wolf's previous best came at the season-opening Vandal Open on Jan. 11, making Saturday's time a good measure of how far Wolf progressed during the seven-week indoor season.
Â
The rest of the Vikings' personal bests came in the men's and women's 3,000 meters. Freshmen
Sam Lingwall and
Zach Grams – a week after posting the Vikings' top two times in the mile – led the Vikings again Saturday, this time in the 3k. Lingwall shaved 10 seconds off his personal best with a time of 8:45.53 in the 3k, while Gram knocked seven seconds off his best with a finish in 8:53.32.
Â
Phoebe Brown and
Zoe Eberspecher added the other two personal bests for the Vikings on the women's side of the 3k. Graduate transfer
Cayla Seligman, who competed for Colorado the last four years, actually posted the top time by a Viking while making her Portland State debut Saturday. Seligman was only pacing Brown and Eberspecher at Saturday's meet, however, so she was well off her personal best in the 3k, even as she led the Vikings with a finish in 10:17.29.
Â
Seligman's pacing helped both Brown and Eberspecher set their own personal bests Saturday, as they finished in 10:25.15 and 10:25.36, respectively. Brown shaved more than seven and a half seconds off her personal best in the 3k, while Eberspecher came close to an 11-second personal best.
