SEATTLE, Wash. — Kaila Gibson came into her last collegiate race at Dempsey Indoor having broken the school record in the 5,000 meters in each of the past two years. A third straight record performance in the University of Washington's indoor facility didn't come to pass Friday, but Gibson made a good run at it, finishing just three seconds short.
Â
Gibson finished the 5,000 in 16:36.74 Friday on the first day of the Husky Classic. Gibson ran 16:33.38 at the 2019 UW Invitational, 20 seconds faster than the time she set in the previous year, when she ran 16:53.60 at the 2018 UW Invitational. Gibson was scheduled to run at the UW Invitational again this season, but scratched from the meet due to an illness.
Â
Gibson nearly set another record at Dempsey Indoor earlier this season, as she came within six seconds of the school record in the indoor 3k at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 18. Gibson finished in 9:42.58, narrowly missing the record
Amber Rozcicha set at 9:36.83 in 2013.
Â
Friday's performance gives Gibson a decision to make ahead of the Big Sky Indoor Championships, Feb. 27-29, in Pocatello, Idaho. Gibson can solo in either the 3k or 5k, or double in both events as she's done each of the past two years. The fact that Gibson has posted near-record performances in both events this season shouldn't make the decision any easier, but it's a good problem to have for Gibson and the Viking coaches.
