With the absence of fall sports in 2020, GoViks.com is going to look back at some great moments in the history of Viking fall sports (volleyball, soccer, football, cross country, golf) on specific dates. This is not an exhaustive list, and not every date is covered, however as the fall progresses, the rich history of Viking Athletics will be remembered.
Cheney, WA (Nov. 10, 2001) - In a record-breaking performance, Ryan Fuqua led the Portland State Vikings to a 37-22 Big Sky Conference victory over Eastern Washington at Woodward Stadium.
Fuqua rushed 45 times for 393 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Vikings to their fifth win of the season. Fuqua set new PSU records for rushing yards and attempts in a single game. His performance was the third-best by a tailback in NCAA I FCS history.Â
Fuqua broke the Portland State rushing record set by Charles Dunn in 2000 when he gained 324 yards against Hofstra.Â
In the first half, Portland State's offense exploded behind the running of Fuqua. The redshirt freshman rushed for 243 yards and three touchdowns in the opening 30 minutes. Fuqua had nine-and 16-yard TD runs in the first period as the Vikings built a 21-0 lead. Then, despite losing a shoe in the backfield on the muddy turf, he broke away for 71 yards at the 5:58 mark of the second quarter. That put the Vikings up 28-3.Â
A Terry Charles' five-yard scoring reception with eight seconds left in the half had the Vikings ahead 34-3. It was his second TD reception of the game.
The Vikings could do no wrong in the first half on either side of the football. The defense held Eastern's offense - ranked number one in the nation - to just 131 yards.
The Eagles picked it up in the second half behind three touchdown passes from Fred Salanoa, but they never seriously threatened. The Viks' Mitchell Fitzhugh picked off a tipped pass to seal the win as Eastern was driving in the fourth quarter.
Although the Vikings only scored a field goal in the second half, Fuqua continued to grind out yards and PSU controlled possession of the ball for nearly 35 minutes. The Vikings compiled 533 yards total offense.
Nick Chenault led the defense with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery in the first quarter that led to a Fuqua touchdown.
