Vikings Rewind, Oct. 4, 2008: Hubel Throws For Record 623 Yards In Win Over Ranked Eagles

With the absence of fall sports in 2020, GoViks.com is going to look back at some great moments in the history of Viking fall sports (volleyball, soccer, football, cross country, golf) on specific dates. This is not an exhaustive list, and not every date is covered, however as the fall progresses, the rich history of Viking Athletics will be remembered.

Portland, OR (Oct. 4, 2008) - Sophomore quarterback Drew Hubel and a nearly unstoppable Portland State offense destroyed pieces of two record books and Eastern Washington, in that order, as the Vikings outgunned the 11th-ranked Eagles, 47-36, at PGE Park.

Hubel completed 44 of 73 passes for five touchdowns - all without an interception - as the Vikings broke a three-game losing streak. Perhaps most amazing was his 623 passing yards, setting a school record, and coming one yard shy of the Big Sky and National record of 624 passing yards (set by Jamie Martin of Weber State in 1991).

The 73 attempts tied the Big Sky single-game record set by Montana's Dave Dickenson against Idaho in 1995. The 44 completions tied the PSU record set by Neil Lomax against Northern Colorado in 1979.

Hubel's yardage beat Portland State's single-game record of 592 yards set by John Charles against Cal Poly in 1991.

Vikings junior wide receiver Mario D'Ambrosio also had a day for himself with 16 receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns. The reception total tied the PSU record set by Stuart Gaussoin in that same 1979 game against Northern Colorado.

The Vikings needed every inch of offensive production to stop the Eagles, whose quarterback Matt Nichols was 34 of 55 passing for 418 yards and two touchdowns.

PSU overcame an early 14-7 Eastern Washington lead in the second quarter. Hubel hit D'Ambrosio on two touchdown passes and Danny Urrego kicked a pair of field goals.

The Vikings stretched that lead to 16 points on another Urrego field goal in the third quarter. Eastern was able to come back with eight points on two occasions but PSU remained in control behind two more Hubel TD tosses.

Portland State's defense was also key to the win, forcing five Eagles' turnovers. Future NFL defensive back DeShawn Shead had two interceptions in the game, and forced a fumble.

The Vikings had four receivers with 100+ yards in the game, including D'Ambrosio (16-192-3), Aaron Woods (8-146-1), Ray Fry (7-102-0) and Daniel Wolverton (5-109-0).

Hubel was no stranger to big games. The lanky QB tied a national record (shared by Neil Lomax) of nine touchdowns passes in his first career start in 2007.
