NAMPA, Idaho — With the Portland State track & field team split across two meets this weekend,
Taylor Elliott had a choice: stay in Portland, or compete in front of family at the Ed Jacoby Invitational.
Â
Elliott chose the latter, and that proved to be a good choice as she set a new overall personal best in the high jump with a clearance at 5-07.25 (1.71m). Elliott – a native of Eagle, Idaho – cleared on her third attempts at 1.66 and 1.71 meters Saturday, placing her second overall at Boise State's Jacksons Indoor Track.
Â
Elliott set her previous indoor best at 1.66 meters two seasons ago when she was a PSU freshman, while her outdoor best of 1.67 meters came back when she was in high school. Elliott surpassed both those marks Saturday, and set the best mark by a Viking since 2006 while moving up to third all time in the indoor high jump at Portland State.
Â
Kristen O'Handley beat her own prep personal best in the 400 meters while placing fifth overall in 57.02 seconds. That was nearly a full second better than her best high school time outdoors, and moved her up to sixth all time in the indoor 400 at Portland State.
Â
O'Handley also ran the 60-meter hurdles in 9.01 seconds Saturday, while she finished 11th overall in the long jump with a best mark of 17-00.75 (5.20m).
Â
Angela Mumford and
Savanna Milroy each competed in the women's shot put Saturday, and finished with marks of 37-09.50 (11.52m) and 25-06.25 (7.78m), respectively.
Â
Braden Masanga competed in the men's pole vault Friday night, but no-heighted after missing all three of his attempts at 4.90 meters. Masanga passed until the bar was at 4.90 meters, which was just under the school record he set at 5.00 meters on the first week of the indoor season.
Â
The Vikings head back up to Seattle next week for the UW Invitational, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.

NEWBERG, Ore. — Portland State head track & field coach
David Hepburn said
Jaron Barrow felt ready to pop a big mark in the men's long jump last weekend at the UW Indoor Preview. Barrow did just that, if only a week late, while leading the Vikings to two event wins on the first day of the Portland Indoor One.
Â
Barrow won the men's long jump with his first seven-meter jump in nearly two years. Barrow jumped 22-11.75 (7.00m) Saturday at George Fox's Multi-Use Facility, bettering the indoor best he set on the opening weekend of the season.
Â
Alexis Buckhaults also won the women's 60-meter hurdles, finishing in a seasonal-best 9.24 seconds. Buckhaults won the finals of the 60 hurdles by .12 seconds over Western Oregon's Ana Popchock, and beat George Fox's Ashley Korb-Doty, the No. 3 finisher, by .35 seconds. Buckhaults also had the top qualifying time Saturday, finishing the preliminary heats in 9.25 seconds.
Â
Buckhaults ran a seasonal-best 8.59 seconds in the regular 60 meters, though she finished behind teammate
Kameron Smith, who crossed the line in 8.27 seconds.
Â
Saturday was the first day of the Portland Indoor One – the first of three meets co-hosted by George Fox and the University of Portland during the indoor season. The second day of the meet shifts to UP's Chiles Center, where the longer sprints and distance events will be contested. Four Vikings compete in the women's 3,000 meters at 12 p.m., which will kick off the Sunday portion of the Portland Indoor One for the Vikings.
